Car Registration and Driver's License When Moving Out of Illinois

When relocating from Illinois to another state, there are several steps you need to take to ensure your car registration and driver's license comply with your new state's laws. Below is a guide to help you with this process:

1. Car Registration

A. Registering Your Vehicle in Your New State

• Timeframe: Most states require vehicle registration within 30 to 90 days of establishing residency.
• Requirements: To register your vehicle, you'll typically need:
  • Your Illinois vehicle registration or title.
  • Proof of ownership (title or lease agreement).
  • Proof of auto insurance that meets your new state's requirements.
  • Payment for registration fees and taxes as required by your new state.

B. Illinois License Plates

• Replacing Plates: You'll need to replace your Illinois license plates with plates issued by your new state.
• Surrendering Plates: Illinois does not require you to return your license plates when moving out. However, you should dispose of them properly after registering your vehicle in your new state.

C. Emissions Testing

Your new state may have different emissions testing or vehicle inspection requirements. Be sure to check with the DMV in your destination state.

2. Driver's License

A. Surrendering Your Illinois Driver's License

• You must surrender your Illinois driver's license when applying for a new one in your new state.
• Your Illinois license will be invalidated, and your new state will issue a replacement license.

B. Timeframe to Apply for a New License

Most states require you to obtain a driver's license within 30 to 60 days of establishing residency.

C. Documents Required for a New License

• Proof of identity (e.g., passport, birth certificate).
• Social Security number or Social Security card.
• Proof of residency in your new state (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement).
• Your current Illinois driver's license.

3. Additional Considerations

A. Canceling Illinois Vehicle Registration

While Illinois does not require you to cancel your registration, you may want to notify the Illinois Secretary of State to avoid potential tax bills or other issues.

B. Auto Insurance Updates

Switch to an auto insurance policy that complies with your new state's requirements. Make sure to cancel your Illinois policy once the new one is active.

C. Taxes and Fees

Some states charge vehicle property taxes or additional fees that differ from Illinois. Check with your new state to understand the costs involved.

Summary

When moving out of Illinois, ensure your car registration and driver's license are updated in your new state within the required timeframe. Replace your license plates, update your auto insurance, and meet all local requirements to stay compliant with state laws. Notify the Illinois Secretary of State if needed to finalize your transition.
